Youth Camp and Pastoral Retreat:
The area surrounding the Youth Camp and Retreat is rich in
history. At the nearby site of Massacre Grounds, one of the
last successful campaigns by the local Indians ended the Spanish
mining interest in the territory.
Behind the camp is the site of the famous Bulldog mine, whose
samples are maintained at the Smithsonian Institute as the
purest gold in the territory. Some people believe it to be
the Dutchman's Lost Mine.
To the east of the camp is the latest ore strike. The owner
of the land hit a pocket of ore worth over $1,000,000 and
is still working the claim.
Three old claims that have been tied up in litigation for
generations are coming available and campers from The Church
at the Mount Youth Camp may be some of the first people to
prospect the area since the old prospectors started the legal
battles over the claims.
Our camp will be a small, old time mining camp, complete
with old time miners tents for accommodations and a mess tent
for cooking and eating in the rare times of inclement weather.
The main activities will be learning to prospect and listening
to accurate tales rich in local history from highly respected
local prospectors and history lessons on the influence of
God in our great nation. There are many hiking trails nearby
and a livery stable is available at Goldfield for organized
trail rides.
Campers will rise to see the sun coming over the incredible
Superstition Mountains and watch its glow stretch across the
desert around them.
Goldfield is a popular tourist attraction. Campers will be
a part of the attractions when the fully loaded train with
visitors from around the world passes by their camp.
The Youth Camp and Retreat is provided by the ministry of
the church. The mess tent will be provided with the necessary
equipment for the preparation and storage of food and provisions
in a "mining camp" atmosphere. Goldfield will graciously
provide the use of public restrooms and showers. For the price
of participation on the educational and historic train ride
and mine tour, campers will enjoy the revelry of the same
view, lifestyle and location that the miners and prospectors
of Goldfield enjoyed over 100 years ago.
